With the food industry under pressure to reduce plastic in single-use items, inventors are
pulling all the stops to make this a reality for all.
According to The Guardian, a million plastic bottles are bought around the world every minute
and the number will jump by another 20% by 2021. As consumers’ concerns about the
environment grow, a change in consumer behaviour has occurred simultaneously. Companies
are now recognising these green smart consumers and are taking necessary action in order to
instil change and reduce the environmental impact of single-use plastics.
The Choose Water bottle, developed by British Scientist James Longcroft, aims to decrease
plastic bottles and save the world’s ocean from being polluted with unwanted plastics.
How does it work?
The outer case is made from 100% recycled sustainably sourced paper pulp, while the
waterproof inner lining is made from fully biodegradable and sustainable materials. The liner
stops the water from reaching the paper outer case and cause it to break down. However, the
key to its success is that all elements of the bottle will fully biodegrade within ‘a few months’,
whether they end up in the ocean or landfill.
Not only is the bottle great for the environment by reducing plastic waste, but the bottle
firm will give all profits to the Water for Africa charity.
